A Year in Review: 2021

Everyone loves a comeback story.

When the players of New Hyde Park North Little League took the field in the fall of 2020, the children needed all of the support they could get. Not only did they rise to the challenge of learning how to play baseball, they did so while coping with a new set of social restrictions, a return to school, and navigating a path back to a new normal.

From the outset, Merillon Sports Association and New Hyde Park North Little League ensured that all safety measures were in place for a successful return to play. As play resumed, the League recorded a 0.0% transmission rate among its players and coaches.

MSA and NHPNLL carried its strict protocols into its pre-season workouts and spring season. With a full year to look forward to, the players of NHPNLL made incredible progress with their collective skills and knowledge of the game.

This was a special season because Merillon Sports Association and New Hyde Park North Little League were celebrating its 70th anniversary servicing the New Hyde Park community. The event was highlighted by its annual parade, held on a picture perfect spring morning. Starting at Notre Dame Church, the players, coaches, and parents marched north on New Hyde Park Road flanked by numerous fire trucks and police vehicles. The parade ended at the Merillon Fieldhouse where a grandstand awaited for the official Opening Day ceremonies. MSA President Thomas Murphy honored healthcare workers from around the community along with a few of its coaches and volunteers for incredible service to the organization. Wayne Wink threw out the ceremonial first pitch in front of a crowd numbering well over a hundred players, parents, and spectators. Kids enjoyed hot dogs and drinks as the ceremony wrapped up.

The Rookie tee-ball division had 8 teams with a whopping 56 players filling out the rosters. Ages ranged from 3-5 years old and the children experienced a blend of skill instruction and modified gameplay.

After a few years of collaborating its spring Little League baseball with surrounding communities, the Farms division (7 and 8 year olds) played a full 12 game season with a playoff tournament without the need to rely on another Little League to help fill out its schedule. It was a banner moment for the resurgence of New Hyde Park North Little League. After an exciting playoff tournament, the Padres finished with an unblemished record and won the 2021 Farms Division Championship. The Cubs finished in second, Athletics in third, and Cardinals in fourth. The Majors team played well against teams from neighboring communities during the spring season.

As the spring season came to a close on Championship Saturday, Merillon Sports Association hosted a cookout and invited the families of New Hyde Park North Little League to attend. Coaches and parents created two teams and played a fun, competitive softball game featuring some highlight plays by several coaches who showed they still have what it takes to play the game the right way. The kids shagged flyballs during batting practice and cheered on their parents and coaches while enjoying hotdogs, hamburgers, and snacks throughout the evening.

As summer started, so did the Merillon Classic Baseball League. This intramural baseball league has been run for over 10 years and services the surrounding communities by giving a place for kids to play competitive intramural baseball. The style of the league allows for teams to travel to different venues and play baseball against teams from surrounding communities. The style of play emulates the travel baseball environment of meeting and competing against kids from different towns while allowing all players of any skill level to signup and play.

Across the Summer and Fall seasons, NHPNLL entered a total of 8 teams and competed against teams from the Little Leagues of Port Washington, Manhasset, Garden City, Floral Park, Williston Park, East Williston, Garden City South, Albertson-Herricks, and New Hyde Park.

The 2021 year was an undisputed success due to the incredible dedication of its coaches, staffers, players, and parents. MSA and NHPNLL look forward to an even stronger 2022 season.
